ENG 110

Naysayer Response

I know that some disagree with my belief that social media is good, and I see their points as well. Social media narrows peoples view of the world because if you see something you do not agree with, you can block that person. The same thing happens in arguments. It also allows for scammers, hackers, predators, and other bad people to lie about who they are, what they look like, how old they are, their interests and more. It is very scary to think that people who should be in jail are freely using social media for their benefit. That, however, is why I also stopped trying to meet people online and focused on only maintaining the relationships that I had made in person. An[RB1] other downside of social media is that it decreases your social skill. Konnikova mentions the possibility of this happening as well “that some social skills may not develop as effectively when so many interactions exist online. We learn how we are and aren’t supposed to act by observing others and then having opportunities to act out our observations ourselves” (7). I have also noticed that people who are on social media more tend to talk to people less than others who are not on social media. I agree with her [RB2] and I think the biggest place we will notice it is in the workforce. I noticed that although Phelps-Roper talks to strangers, she does her research in them like she did with Abitbol. She made sure that he was in fact someone she could talk to and trust with certain information. “Abitb[RB3] ol knew that at least one member of Westboro had committed a sin that Leviticus also deems a capital crime” (Chen 22). She trusted him with this information, and he did not spread it instead he used it to make her question the church
