I think maintaining friendship is the best use of social media there is. Of course, that changes based on the person who is using it however from my own experience that is the best use of social media there is. Adrian Chen uses examples in his writing that confirm this for me. Phelps-Roper was talking to a man David Abitbol, a creator of a Jewish-culture blog “Jewlicious”. Through his curiosity of neo-Nazis and hate groups was he able to stay connected to Phelps-Roper, “he signed all his blog posts on Jewlicious with the handle “ck”—for “christ killer”—as if it were a badge of honor. Yet she found him funny and engaging” (Chen 17). Through his logical way of thinking, Abitbol was he able to change her a little bit. The connections they made helped her question the ways of the church and when famous actor, Brittany Murphy passed away, instead of cheering like everyone else that was in the basement for a sermon she felt sad about the death. Chen shows us this to show how the connections through social media has helped her, “As she continued scrolling through Twitter, she saw that it was full of people mourning Murphy. The contrast between the grief on Twitter and the buoyant mood in the basement unsettled her. She couldn’t bring herself to post a tweet thanking God for Murphy’s death” (Chen 17-18 ). Although this was technically a good thing for the church, she knew that she should not be happy and through the debates with Abitbol, she learned that not everything the church says is right. Through her correct use of social media and her being willing to connect with others and nurture her friendship with Abitbol, she was able to start to differentiate the churches beliefs and her own beliefs.
