About Me

Hello, my name is Owen Romanek I am a Marine Science major who loves to learn about different ecosystems and how land around the ocean affects the animals, organizims and people’s way of living. I love freshwater fishing and would like to learn more about freshwater ecosystems as well. For me, traveling is something I want to do all the time. Exploring different places and learning the relationship between the people and the environment through food, traditions, and history of the said place I am in.

I am also very interested in how plant life can create completely new ecosystems. For example, I went to St.Croix Virgin Island this past summer and I got to learn about a type of floating seaweed called sargassum which is a type of algae cause by nutrient pollution from runoff of the land. I was on a fishing charter and the fisherman who brought us out told us about how smaller organisms like to eat and live in it, which attracts larger fish to stay near it. We fished that area last and that was where we caught the majority of fish that day. It is very interesting how one thing like sargassum can cause a complete change in the habits surrounding it, and would love to learn more about things like this.
