ENG 110

Learning Outcome 2: Integrating Sources

Be able to integrate their ideas with others using summary, paraphrase, quotation, analysis, and synthesis of relevant sources.

Integrating sources has always been a problem for me because when I write I tend to think that only you and me are going to read it. This makes me forget to introduce not only the quote but sometimes the name of the source and the authors backstory. I feel like I have gotten much better at not only introducing quotes but analysis as well. For example in my first essay, I did not even let the reader know when a quote was coming.

A body paragraph from my first essay.

This quote was not introduced at all, and it causes an unintentional pause in the paragraph and makes the reader stop and recognize that this is something different. It is not smooth and clear. If you have ever read Frankenstein, that is what this quote above reminds me of. You have no idea who is speaking or what they are speaking about. It is quite chaotic and messy. This quote from my third essay has a small explanation before the quote a transition into the quote and good analysis.

Body Paragraph from my third essay.

First is the thing I am about to talk about which is the amount of joy she has felt, then I introduce my opinion and let the reader know that a quote is coming by using; Smith writes. It lets the reader know that they are about to read someone else’s words because I am not Smith but they know Zadie Smith because introduced her before I quoted her.
